Gujarat Giants will lock horns with Mumbai Indians in the opening match of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Saturday, March 4.

Led by Australian wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney, the Adani Sportline-owned Gujarat Giants have assembled a strong and balanced squad with a good mix of experienced and young players for the first-ever WPL.

Apart from captain Mooney, the Giants boast a well-rounded squad with the likes of vice-captain Sneh Rana, Harleen Deol, Ashleigh Gardner, Georgia Wareham and Sophia Dunkley.

Meanwhile, youngsters Hurley Gala, Parunika Sisodia and Shabnam Shakil will also aim to impress for the Giants in WPL 2023.

Under the tutelage of mentor Mithali Raj and head coach Rachael Haynes, the Giants will look to make a winning start against a formidable Mumbai Indians outfit.

On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians women’s team has named swashbuckling batter Harmanpreet Kaur as captain for the inaugural WPL.

The Harmanpreet-led Mumbai Indians have also built a powerful squad with some world-class players, including Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr, Chloe Tryon, Heather Graham and Pooja Vastrakar.

The Mumbai-based outfit has also roped in former India fast bowler Jhulan Goswami as mentor and bowling coach, while appointing ex-England captain Charlotte Edwards as their head coach.

Looking at the two power-packed squads, we expect a close encounter at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. The opening match of WPL 2023 will start at 7:30 PM Indian Standard Time (IST).
